Major (Retired) Geordie Wright-Rivers began his military career joining the Army Apprentice College in 1977 as an Apprentice Aircraft Technician. Following a short period as an A Vehicle Mechanic and a prolonged period at the Training Battalion and Depot REME as an Assistant Physical Training Instructor (PTI) he was promoted to Sergeant and transferred to Regimental Duties. A full career as a soldier saw him serve the majority of his time in Germany and on operations in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq.
In 1998, on completion of his tour as Regimental Sergeant Major at 2 Battalion REME in Germany, Geordie was commissioned and completed tours of duty at 2 Battalion REME as Quartermaster (Technical), Adjutant at Joint Headquarters in Rheindahlen, Quartermaster at 1 and 3 Battalions REME finishing as Officer Commanding Recruiting Group North East in Newcastle.
Taking early retirement from the Corps, Geordie was selected for a Civil Service post as SO2 Coordinator in Equipment Support Branch at Headquarters 1st (United Kingdom) Armoured Division and remained there until the division closed and relocated to the United Kingdom in 2014. Geordie then joined the REME Secretariat team later that year and is responsible for day to day management of the Corps Officers’ Mess, the REME Sports Association, the REME Institution and fulfils the role of Corps Property Manager.
Geordie enjoys all sports, particularly rugby, skiing and golf, and is a Vice President at the Royal Wootton Bassett Rugby Club. He lives locally with his wife Toni and they have two grown up children, Ashlea and Molly.
