Mike enlisted into the REME at the age of 16 and was trained in the Army Apprentice College as a Vehicle Mechanic. After 17 years in the ranks and postings to a wide variety of units in the UK, Germany, Hong Kong and Brunei, he was commissioned into the REME in 1996.
Initially starting as a Welfare Officer with 24 Airmobile Brigade CSS Bn, he headed to Germany again as the OC Workshop in 1 GS Regiment Workshop; operational tours in Bosnia and Kosovo followed in quick succession. Mike was promoted to Major in 2000 and began a wide and varied career path including Staff Officer appointments in HQ Land Command, the Defence Logistic Organisation, HQ Land Forces, HQ Theatre Troops and a Command appointment with 6 Bn REME. He made numerous visits to Iraq in support of Urgent Operational Requirements and had an operational tour in Afghanistan. His final tour in the Army was as the as the lead staff officer for the move of the Corps from Arborfield and Bordon to our new home in Lyneham.
Mike left the Army in Feb 2105 after nearly 39 years, and began working for Aspire Defence Limited he later returned to Lyneham as a contractor delivering the project he started some years beforehand. Mike started work in the Regimental Headquarters in March 2016 as the Corps Secretary and Chief Executive to the REME charity.
Mike is married to Shirley and has two children. He still enjoys off road motorcycling but his old body can no longer cope with competing at high level, instead he enjoys supporting those that can. He is the assistant secretary for Army motorcycling and maintains close links with REME motorcycling. A member of the REME Sailing Association he also enjoys the occasional offshore sail.
